FLAGSHIP! Series Reviews

“Mike J. Krentz transports us with his story about real human drama, emotions and life told against a backdrop of international intrigue. The author gives us a cast of female characters who are complex, real, and in every way national heroes. The arc of the central protagonist, a female aviator named Kate, takes the reader on a journey through self-doubt, discovery, and eventually triumph as she vanquishes enemies foreign and domestic. Many of the women in his books, including one of my favorite characters named Cricket, quite simply kick ass. And, their stories, as told expertly by the author, will inspire you.

“Mike J. Krentz writes with an elegance that only a few writers possess and the results are splendid. This trilogy is a must read, and I cannot wait to see what the author delivers next!”

“Krentz writes with an authenticity that can only be achieved by someone who has ‘been there, done that.’ This is a fast-moving thriller involving potentially real national security threats. Well-crafted characters and the interweaving of their lives and complex challenges evolve throughout the trilogy with growing tension and excitement. If the reader liked Tom Clancy, you won’t be able to put down Mike Krentz and will be eagerly awaiting his next novel.”

“My husband and I both enjoyed these 3 books. My husband has a background in both naval aviation and navy medicine and found them interesting. Anxiously awaiting a 4th one!”

“As a former member of the Seventh Fleet staff, I was excited and eager to read CAPT Krentz’s three books. The drama, pacing, expression of tension in both the professional and personal lives of the characters I found to be exceptional. The storyline is surprisingly believable, and is in fact not inconceivable in today’s world.”

“This was a very enjoyable, suspenseful book. It gave closure to things that had carried over from the first two books. Recommend the book.”

“Fast paced, very well-written, draws you in!

“The action is fast, the characters real and believable, and the power plays between individuals and branches in the military shown superbly; the last detail that drew me in was how the author shows Lieutenant Mahoney’s teenager now son immersing himself in playing World of Warcraft, which I personally relate to. With the exception of a few minor details this was shown very well – I can’t believe the author didn’t play WoW himself!

“Actually I was amazed at how well the author portrayed Kate and her emotional life – I would even go so far as to call this a very feminist book! Quite surprising coming from a male US Navy physician as the author is described on the cover… no doubt gender stereotyping from me here 🙂 It was such a pleasure to read a well-written book with a strong woman central character who can do combat with the best of them, and yet have fragile emotions, and go through difficult moments both fighting the dislike and undermining efforts of her Commander and dealing with the troubles her almost estranged son has gotten himself into. The author shows the events from several people’s perspectives, and each one is compelling and makes us understand their actions and motivations, even if we may dislike them at the same time.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would really like to read a sequel to find out what happens to the characters now.”

“After his debut novel, Riven Dawn, Mike J. Krentz delivers big with South China Sundown. He further develops one of the best heroines to come out of military fiction, Kate Mahoney, and introduces the reader to another female aviator, Cricket, who will also win their heart. The women and men in his books face geopolitical and interpersonal challenges with bravery, authenticity and grace, and Krentz crafts a story full of tension, intrigue, and triumph across all these challenges. You must read this series!”

“A MUST READ – ENJOYABLE, BELIEVABLE, GEOPOLITICALLY SOUND

“I just finished the Kindle version of this book (the first on my iPad) and I couldn’t put it down. Similar to Mike’s two previous books, he clearly and accurately depicts the challenges of active duty life of a senior female Naval Aviator who’s a single parent trying to juggle a highly successful career with raising a son. He successfully intertwines the strategic and tactical challenges both our country and our Navy faces in the Pacific. Not only does this book hit the bullseye, it represents today’s geopolitical situation in a very clear and fluid manner. I highly recommend this book!”

Great book! This was an excellent second book to develop the characters and carry on the story line. Starting the next book tonight!!!”

“GEOPOLITICALLY RELEVANT AND ENJOYABLE TO READ

“Another great, very accurate accounting by Mike Krentz. His knowledge of fleet operations as well as the geopolitical landscape of the Pacific enables him to weave a story that is both believable and enjoyable. Highly recommended!”

“GREAT READ – REALISTIC AND HISTORICALLY PERTINENT

“Great book. Having worked in that Area of Responsibility, it is an accurate account of military interactions. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the interpersonal relations that Mike developed in the book. Highly recommended as a very enjoyable read that will help bring folks up to speed on the geopolitical picture in the Pacific that our country faces.”

“Mike J Krentz is a master of military drama. I love fiction filled with action, drama, and romance. It’s one of my guilty pleasures–ranks right up there with eating chocolate nut-filled candy.

“Mike J. Krentz’s Riven Dawn promised, I thought, a similar respite to enjoying a Snickers. I dove in expecting to find characters I’d like, writing I could tear through, and a story that would feed my need for escape. What I discovered was characters I liked and admired, writing I could tear through that also delighted my intellect, and a story that fed my need for escape and my soul. Far better than a cellophane-wrapped, factory-produced hunk of sugar and fat, reading Riven Dawn was like savoring my Grandmother’s eight-layer scratch-made chocolate cake. And, in case you’re wondering folks, her cake would make your tongue slap your brains out.

“Mike J. Krentz writes like a maestro. He has created a strong, believable, and admirable protagonist in Kate Mahoney, and he weaves a story that keeps you turning the page. I can’t wait to see what she does, where she goes, and whose ass she serves up next.

“Read this book, people. You’ll be glad you did. As for me, I’m diving into the second book of the Flagship! series, South China Sundown.”

“I am interested in books about the military. I grew up with a very patriotic father so books about the military fascinate me. I liked this book because the author actually was in the Navy; therefore, the events seemed realistic. It was also a view of women in the military whose job is not always easy.”

“A great book! As a former female naval officer, I was able to relate to the main character and many of the struggles she endured. I couldn’t put the book down! Brought me back to my Navy days and resurrected many fond memories of my time in service. Well written, fast paced, and great story line with relatable characters and real life struggles-alcoholism, abuse, sexism, single parenthood. I can’t wait for the next novel in the series!”

“As a former Marine Captain, I enjoyed that the military usage and terminology was pretty spot on and I didn’t find any glaring military mistakes, as is often the case in such novels. As a woman veteran, I found a lot of the incidents, challenges, and descriptions of the prejudices found by women serving in the Fleet with men to be fairly realistic.

“There aren’t too many well-done books on the military experiences of females in the military and I feel that this one is a good example of the genre.”

“Modern, exciting – my husband stole it from me!

“A great read! A timely military thriller with a realistic strong military heroine. She’s tough but not in an unbelievable Hollywood way. She is a genuine military leader, working through many challenges at work and home. The book has an exciting lead and characters who draw you in and leave you wanting to get to know them even more. I can’t wait for more. I hope to see more of this saga.”

“Accurate depiction of staff officer conflicts mixed with real time conflicts. Fast paced and well-developed characters. Ready for the sequel. A great read for both the avid military buff and those who relish a thriller.”

“It’s been thirteen years since I wore my uniform … and an Air Force uniform at that. Mike Krentz’s Riven Dawn brought me back to military life. I commend Krentz for giving us a military heroine with modern challenges – professional jealousy, single motherhood, and internet predators – that reflect today’s military life. Yet she rises to the occasion to demonstrate that uncommon valor remains a common virtue when the heroine puts her training to the test.”

“Krentz delivers an action packed, reality based roller coaster ride. Recommended read for those who enjoy military thriller that includes the ‘rest of the story’ of military life.”

“This is a wonderful pager. I found the main character very believable and definitely the girl next store, especially on a military base. Hope we get to follow this character in another book!”

“Great book I can’t put down, waiting to see what is going to happen. Can’t wait to see how everything is going to tie in together. Keeping me up reading past by bedtime.”
